DEFINITIONS: Literary Devices
1. Imagery: When the author uses descriptions of the 5 senses to paint a picture in the reader's mind
2. Verbal Irony: When something is said that the opposite of what is meant (i.e.: sarcasm)
3. Dramatic Irony: When the reader knows something that the character doesn't know
4. Situational Irony: When the outcome of a situation is opposite of what is expected by the character
5. Symbolism: When a concrete object stands for an abstract idea (i.e.: a bottle labeled with a skull and crossbones to symbolize poison)
6. Tone: The word an author uses to convey a specific feeling about a subject
7. Mood: The emotion that the reader feels based on the writer's words or tone
8. Allusion: When one literary work references another literary work without specifically quoting it, usually a well known piece of literature
9. Flashback: When the story line breaks to show something that happened in the past to a character so readers can learn from it
